2008P(HI)-25DER-005T Trail Die Reverse
Error
Description
Steven Bernatowicz discovered this trail die reverse on the 2008 Philadelphia Mint Hawaii State Quarter, the final issue of the 50 State Quarters Program begun in 1999. Documented at Stage B with both sides at mid-die-state, the obverse carries a die scratch between Washington's nose and the UN of UNITED, while the reverse shows a die gouge to the right of King Kumehameha. The Hawaii Quarter reverse depicts King Kumehameha I, the warrior king who unified the Hawaiian Islands, with the state outline and motto superimposed. Trail die reverse varieties arise when a working die retains partial impressions from an earlier hubbing event, and the die gouge adjacent to the royal figure provides a precise landmark for locating the reverse diagnostic. The die scratch on the obverse, threading between Washington's profile and the UNITED legend, offers an independent obverse confirmation point. As the fiftieth and final state quarter, the Hawaii issue holds particular significance within the State Quarters Program, and trail die discoveries on this concluding design contribute to the variety census for this decade-long commemorative series.
