Description

Documented by the Trail Dies catalog and discovered by Steven Bernatowicz, the 2008P(HI)-25DER-004T is a trail die reverse variety found on the 2008 Philadelphia Mint Hawaii State Quarter, the final issue of the 50 State Quarters Program. Trail dies occur when a secondary design impression appears faintly offset from the primary image on a die, typically caused during the die manufacturing or installation process when an unintended contact creates a ghost-like doubled image distinct from hub doubling in its origin mechanism. Die marker documentation identifies Stage "A" in early die state (EDS), with the obverse showing a die scratch extending from the top of Washington's head to the right of the last S in STATES, and the reverse also in EDS with two die scratches visible over the O of DOLLAR. The early die state designation means these markers were present from the very beginning of this die's production life, likely originating during die preparation rather than accumulating through use. The 2008 Hawaii State Quarter features a reverse designed by Don Everhart depicting King Kamehameha I standing with his arm extended against a backdrop of the Hawaiian Islands, with the state motto "Ua Mau ke Ea o ka Aina i ka Pono" (The life of the land is perpetuated in righteousness). Struck at the Philadelphia Mint in copper-nickel clad composition (8.33% nickel, 91.67% copper) weighing 5.67 grams with a 24.26 mm diameter, Hawaii was the 50th and final state quarter released in 2008, making trail die varieties on this issue particularly interesting as terminal entries in both the State Quarters Program's production history and the trail die catalog for the series. Bernatowicz's discovery adds to the systematic documentation of trail die events across the State Quarters program.
