2008P(HI)-25DER-002T Trail Die Reverse
Error
Description
Discovered by Bill Taschwer, this second trail die reverse for the 2008 Philadelphia Mint Hawaii State Quarter is a notably unusual catalog entry because the vast majority of documented trail dies appear on Lincoln Cents rather than quarters. The Hawaii State Quarter reverse depicts King Kamehameha I, the monarch who unified the Hawaiian Islands, standing with his arm extended, and the quarter's bold design elements provided surfaces where trail line displacement could manifest. Originally described as a dual directional trail die with reciprocal bearings showing light trail lines from the word HAWAII, 1959, and the tip of the spear, this variety carried distinctive evidence of lateral die movement during hubbing. At Stage B mid-die state, no notable obverse markers were observed, while the reverse shows three small die dots in front of King Kamehameha's face. The T suffix designates this as a trail-lines-only classification. Hawaii was the final state honored in the 50 State Quarters program (1999-2008), making this variety one of the last trail dies discovered on the series that reshaped American coin collecting by introducing millions of new enthusiasts to numismatics.
