Description

A third catalog entry for the 2008-D $1 JQA WDDR-009, this Presidential Dollar listing documents the same John Quincy Adams doubled die reverse variety where slight doubling appears on the right arm of the Statue of Liberty just above the robe's sleeve. The existence of multiple catalog entries for a single variety can reflect different submission records, die state documentation efforts, or cross-referencing within the database system. The obverse die markers remain consistent across all entries: a small die gouge north of the 6 in "6th," a small die gouge to the left of the P in PRESIDENT, and a small die gouge to the right of the bottom of the 2 in 1825. The reverse carries a die gouge dot inside the lower N of UNITED. The slight doubling above Liberty's sleeve represents a minor hub displacement in an area where the transition from the arm's cylindrical form to the flat drapery of the robe creates a natural edge that accentuates even subtle die variety features. The Presidential Dollar program issued four coins per year from 2007 to 2016, each featuring a different president on the obverse while sharing the Statue of Liberty reverse designed by Don Everhart. John Quincy Adams, the sixth president and the only president who was the son of a previous president (John Adams, the second president), served from 1825 to 1829. The Denver Mint struck these coins in manganese brass clad composition at 8.10 grams with a 26.5 mm diameter, with edge lettering bearing the date and mintmark. The Wexler Team designation remains the sole known catalog reference for this variety, and collectors examining 2008-D Adams dollars should focus on the right arm area just above where the sleeve meets the robe for the doubled die confirmation, then verify through the obverse die gouge pattern.
