2008 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-008

Description

This listing represents a second cataloged instance of the 2008-D John Quincy Adams Presidential Dollar WDDR-008, designated by the Wexler Team as 2008-D $1 JQA WDDR-008. The variety shows slight doubling on the right arm of the Statue of Liberty just above the sleeve of the robe on Don Everhart's common Statue of Liberty reverse used across all Presidential Dollars. Struck at the Denver Mint in manganese brass clad over copper at 8.10 grams and 26.5 mm diameter, Presidential Dollars feature edge-lettered dates and mintmarks rather than the traditional face inscriptions. The obverse die marker is a small die gouge appearing as a dot to the right of the center of the J in JOHN on the obverse portrait. Reverse markers include a small die gouge on the upper right of the tablet held by the Statue of Liberty and a die chip on the upper serif of the dollar sign. The Presidential Dollar series generated numerous doubled die varieties because of the complexity of producing coins with three distinct die components — obverse, reverse, and edge — simultaneously.
