2008D(HI)-25DER-001T Trail Die Reverse
Error
Description
This 2008 Denver Mint Hawaii State Quarter is the first documented trail die reverse variety for the issue, cataloged as 2008D(HI)-25DER-001T. A trail die leaves faint ghost design elements from a previously struck coin that remained in the striking chamber during the next strike. Found by Louis Fan, who also discovered the Alaska trail die variety from the same Denver Mint production period. Both the obverse and reverse are in Late Early Die State with no additional die markers noted. Attributed by Trail Dies. Hawaii holds the distinction of being the 50th and final state in the 50 State Quarters program, making this the very last state represented in the series that ran from 1999 through 2008. The Hawaii quarter reverse, designed by Don Everhart, features King Kamehameha I and the state outline, and any trail die ghost impressions appear as faint transferred elements over this design.
