Description

Cataloged by Cuds on Coins as CU-100c-2007P-01R(JA), this rim cud on the 2007 Philadelphia John Adams Presidential Dollar in Position A preserves a raised, featureless blob at the coin's edge where a fragment of the die broke away during production. Rim cuds form when a section of the die at its periphery fractures and detaches completely, leaving a void that fills with metal during striking. The Presidential Dollar series, launched in 2007, introduced manganese-brass clad composition and edge lettering. John Adams was the second release, following George Washington. The Position A designation refers to the edge lettering orientation relative to the obverse. Die breaks severe enough to produce cuds document the structural limits of dies under the high striking pressures required for fully detailed dollar coins. This variety was added to the Cuds on Coins registry on December 10, 2018, extending the documented timeline of cud discoveries well beyond the coin's original production year.
