2007P-1DER-012T Trail Die Reverse

Description

Discovered by Jeremy Gardner and cataloged by Trail Dies, this 2007 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Memorial Cent exhibits a trail die reverse produced by lateral die movement during the striking process. Trail lines emanate from reverse design elements where the die's horizontal displacement dragged metal across the surface at the moment of impact. The twelfth documented trail die reverse for the 2007-P date indicates active variety research on Philadelphia cent production during this period. The 2007 Lincoln Memorial Cent was struck during the penultimate year of the Memorial reverse, which would be temporarily replaced by four Bicentennial reverses in 2009 before the Union Shield debuted in 2010. Frank Gasparro's architectural depiction of the Lincoln Memorial provided detailed columnar elements, steps, and inscriptions that served as sensitive indicators of trail die effects, making Memorial Cents productive for trail die variety research throughout the design's fifty-year run.
