2007P-1DER-006T Trail Die Reverse

Description

Discovered by Joe Koelling of North Carolina and documented by Trail Dies, the 2007P-1DER-006T records a trail die reverse variety on the 2007-P Lincoln Memorial Cent, one of the final years of the Memorial reverse design that would be replaced by four bicentennial reverses in 2009 and the Shield reverse in 2010. The documented die stage is Stage A at Early Die State, with the obverse showing a small die gouge to the right of the VDB designer's initials (Victor David Brenner's mark on the Lincoln portrait truncation). The reverse in EDS shows no noted die markers, indicating a clean die surface at this early production point. Trail die varieties are created by a distinct mechanism from doubled dies: while doubled dies result from hub-to-die misalignment during die manufacture, trail dies involve die-to-planchet irregularities during the striking process where a secondary ghost impression of the design trails across the coin surface. The 2007-P cent was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in copper-plated zinc composition (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper plating), weighing 2.5 grams with a 19 mm diameter. Frank Gasparro's Lincoln Memorial reverse, featuring the detailed architectural facade of the Memorial building with its twelve columns and the inscription UNITED STATES OF AMERICA above E PLURIBUS UNUM, provides the complex design field where trail die impressions manifest as subtle secondary outlines. The designation -006T indicates this is the sixth trail die reverse documented for 2007-P Lincoln Cents, reflecting the active documentation effort by the Trail Dies organization in cataloging these modern striking varieties.
