Description

Sharing the same die pair as its Position A counterpart, this Position B specimen of the 2007 George Washington Presidential Dollar WDDR-007 is distinguished by its edge lettering orientation: when the obverse faces up, the incused edge inscription appears inverted relative to Position A coins. Both positions were produced during normal Mint operations when planchets entered the edge-lettering collar in either orientation, meaning Position A and Position B coins of WDDR-007 were struck from identical dies but differ in edge inscription alignment. The doubled die feature appears at the intersection of the second ray clockwise from Washington's head and the right arm of the Statue of Liberty. Obverse die markers match Position A: die gouges north of the 1 in 1789, above and between the 7 and 8 of 1789, and above both 7s in 1797. The reverse shows a die scratch west-southwest to east-northeast right of the bottom of the second A in AMERICA. Collectors pursuing complete WDDR-007 representation need both edge lettering orientations.
