Description

Carrying the Wexler designation 2007-P $1 GW WDDR-005, this doubled die reverse was discovered on a 2007-P George Washington Presidential dollar, the inaugural issue in the Presidential Dollars 2007 to Date series. The primary diagnostic shows doubling at the intersection of the second ray clockwise from the head and the right arm of the Statue of Liberty on the reverse, a specific pickup point within Don Everhart's Statue of Liberty design that served as the common reverse for all Presidential dollars. Reverse die markers include a short die scratch running east-southeast from the lower right of the second S in STATES, a die scratch from west to east through the top of the first A to the top of the M in AMERICA, and a die scratch running west-southwest from the rim to the right of the first A in AMERICA. No significant obverse die markers were noted. The 2007 Washington dollar was composed of manganese brass (88.5% copper, 6% zinc, 3.5% manganese, 2% nickel), weighing 8.1 grams with a 26.5 mm diameter and a plain edge bearing the date, mintmark, and motto as edge inscriptions. Philadelphia produced 176,680,000 Washington Presidential dollars. As the first issue in the series, the 2007 George Washington dollar received intense collector scrutiny, contributing to the documentation of multiple doubled die varieties. The Statue of Liberty reverse design with its radiating rays provided geometric elements where hub displacement could manifest with particular visibility.
