Description

Seventh doubled die reverse for the 2007 Denver Mint Lincoln Memorial Cent, WDDR-007 belongs to the final wave of Memorial reverse DDRs produced before the design's retirement after the 2008 production year. The Lincoln Memorial reverse had been struck continuously for nearly five decades by 2007, and the accumulated die-making experience of that span did not eliminate hub doubling, which remains an inherent possibility in any multi-impression die sinking process. When the working hub shifts between any of the passes required to fully impress the design into the working die, the resulting overlapping imagery creates a doubled die that transfers its distinctive characteristics to every coin struck. Seven cataloged DDRs for the 2007-D date demonstrates that the Denver Mint's high-volume production continued to generate these varieties at a steady rate throughout the Memorial design's final years. Gasparro's columned facade, with its repetitive architectural geometry, serves as an ideal canvas for detecting and documenting even subtle hub displacement — the parallel columns and horizontal steps create reference lines against which any deviation becomes apparent.
