About This Coin

The 2006 San Francisco Old Mint Centennial Commemorative Five Dollar Gold is a United States commemorative dollar. The gold coin companion to the Old Mint dollar, this $5 piece features a vintage coin reverse design from the era when the San Francisco Mint was a major gold coinage facility. The Old Mint processed much of California's gold rush output. The obverse features the San Francisco Old Mint building from the original 1869 construction drawing, while the reverse displays a reproduction of the 1906 Coronet Liberty Half Eagle reverse, featuring an eagle with upraised wings. Designed by Charles Vickers, Joseph Mena/Christian Gobrecht. Struck in 90% gold, 10% copper, weighing 8.36 grams, 21.6 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. The Old Mint $5 gold's connection to San Francisco's gold-coining heritage and its vintage reverse design make it particularly appealing to collectors of early U.S. gold coinage.
