Cud errors form when a section of the die fractures at the rim and the broken piece either falls away or shifts position, leaving a featureless raised area on the struck coin where the die fragment no longer imparts design detail. The resulting blob at the coin's edge is solid metal pushed up into the void left by the missing die steel, and cuds are prized by error collectors for their dramatic visual impact.
