CU-25c-2006P-13R Cud
Error
Description
First documented on January 14, 2019 by Cuds on Coins, CU-25c-2006P-13R represents the thirteenth reverse cud error cataloged for the 2006-P Colorado State Quarter. This die break at the rim created a raised featureless area where a portion of the reverse die fractured and separated, leaving a void that the planchet metal filled during the striking process. No cross-references to other error cataloging systems exist for this variety. The concentration of cud errors on the 2006-P Colorado quarter is remarkable even within the broad State Quarters program, suggesting that the particular combination of die steel, press pressure, and production volume at the Philadelphia Mint during Colorado quarter runs produced above-average die mortality. Norman Nemeth's Rocky Mountain design includes fine topographic detail in the mountain range, sky, and banner inscription "Colorful Colorado" that would be disrupted by any rim break extending into the design field. Cud errors are categorized by their position along the rim, measured in clock-face notation, and by the degree to which they encroach upon the coin's design elements. Larger cuds that obliterate portions of key inscriptions or design features are generally more desirable than small rim-only breaks, and the specific characteristics of the thirteenth documented reverse cud would need to be compared against the other sixteen known examples to establish its relative prominence. Philadelphia's total production of 274.8 million Colorado quarters ensures that scattered examples of each documented cud variety survived the Mint's quality control screening and entered circulation, where alert collectors continue to find them.
