2006-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001

Description

Holding the primary reverse doubled die designation for the 2006-D Jefferson nickel, WDDR-001 presents Class VIII (Tilted Hub Doubling) visible below the upper portion of the door frame on the center door above the steps of the Monticello building. Class VIII doubling results from a tilt in the hub during the die sinking process, creating a displacement pattern that varies across the die surface — areas near the tilt axis show minimal separation while areas farther from the axis exhibit progressively greater spread, producing an asymmetric distribution of doubling intensity across the design. The 2006-D represents the first Denver Mint issue of the "Return to Monticello" Jefferson nickel reverse design, reintroduced after the two-year Westward Journey series (2004-2005) that had temporarily replaced Felix Schlag's Monticello with designs commemorating the Lewis and Clark expedition. Denver's nickel production in 2006 provided the die consumption necessary for doubled die events to occur during the resumed Monticello reverse production. The center door's upper frame area — where the doubling manifests — sits at a prominent architectural focal point of the building's columned portico, and the geometric precision of the frame's straight lines makes even subtle tilted hub displacement visible as a secondary impression offset from the primary architectural element. Reverse die markers include a die dot positioned to the upper left of the left F of FIVE — a small raised dot that provides a fingerprint diagnostic independent of the doubling for confirming the correct die. No significant obverse die markers were noted. As WDDR-001, this represents the first and presumably most notable reverse doubled die documented for the 2006-D nickel. Collectors should examine the center door frame area under 15-20x magnification for the Class VIII displacement, then confirm the die dot near the left F of FIVE.
