2006D-1DER-012T Trail Die Reverse

Description

Discovered by Cal Goddard, this trail die reverse variety was identified on the 2006-D Lincoln Memorial cent struck at the Denver Mint. Trail die errors occur when a previously struck coin is fed back through the coining press and receives a second impression from a different die pair, leaving a faint ghost of the first strike visible beneath the final design. The reverse carries the trail image on this specimen. Documented in Stage C, both sides are in late die state. The obverse LDS is characterized by many small die dents scattered across the die surface, reflecting accumulated wear and minor damage from extended production. The reverse LDS shows two die gouges to the left of the U in UNITED, providing a localized attribution marker. The extensive obverse die denting combined with reverse gouges indicates these dies had seen considerable service before producing this trail die specimen. Trail dies on Denver Mint cents are documented alongside their Philadelphia counterparts in the systematic trail die catalog.
