Description

Found by Jean Lee, this eighth documented trail die variety for the 2006-D Lincoln Memorial Cent shows trail lines extending from the top right corners of the E PLURIBUS UNUM letters, with additional trails from TES of STATES and the O in OF. Trail dies form when die misalignment during striking creates displaced ghost impressions of design elements, and the offset angle of 060 degrees positions these trails in the upper-right quadrant relative to the normal design. Die markers at Stage C late die state include a die dot below the B of LIBERTY on the obverse and a die crack in upper column two on the reverse, indicating this die had accumulated significant wear by the time these characteristics were documented. The late die state designation means the die was nearing the end of its service life when coins displaying this trail die were struck. Denver's 2006 cent production was part of the closing chapter for Gasparro's Memorial reverse, which would end after 2008. Eight trail die varieties for a single date and mint speaks to the thoroughness of Trail Dies' cataloging across the Memorial Cent series.
