Description

Discovered by Jean Lee and cataloged by Trail Dies, the 2006D-1DER-006T is a trail die reverse variety found on the Denver-minted Lincoln Memorial Cent, also cross-designated as 2006D-1WHDER-001T. Trail lines are visible from the bottom right corners of the letters in the motto E PLURIBUS UNUM, with additional faint trail lines from the bottom of the letters TA of STATES. The offset direction is measured at 110 degrees, providing a precise angular reference for the displacement of the ghost impressions relative to the primary design elements. The Lincoln Memorial Cent was struck in copper-plated zinc (2.50 grams, 19.05 mm diameter), bearing the Brenner obverse and Gasparro Memorial reverse in the series' forty-seventh year of production. Die markers place this variety at Stage A with both obverse and reverse at Early Die State: the obverse shows no notable markers, while the reverse exhibits a small die dot under the A of STATES plus a die crack in the upper part of column 2 of the Memorial building. The early die state designation indicates these trail die features were present from the beginning of the die's service life, consistent with trail lines being created during the die manufacturing process rather than developing through progressive wear. The 110-degree offset angle and the EPU trail line positioning provide the key diagnostics for confirming this variety under magnification.

Die Markers

  • Stage “A”, obverse is EDS – none noted
  • Reverse is EDS – a small die dot is seen under the A of STATES. A die crack is seen in the upper part of column 2.
