Description

The Pacific coastline of the 2005 Jefferson Nickel "Ocean in View" reverse generated an extraordinary number of doubled die attributions, and WDDR-046 is among those attributed by Kenneth Russell (Wexler Variety ID: 2005 P WDDR-046 Satin Finish Ocean in View). The Westward Journey Nickel Series — the first replacement of both Jefferson nickel faces since 1938 — ran 2004-2005 to mark the Lewis and Clark bicentennial, and variety researchers examined the new designs intensively. Of the four Westward Journey reverses, the Ocean in View proved most prolific, with its coastal topography generating more than 80 distinct cataloged DDR varieties. Satin Finish coins for the 2005 Uncirculated Mint Sets were struck with burnished planchets on standard dies, yielding a surface between business strike and proof in reflectivity. Variety hunters must use low-angle raking light rather than overhead illumination. Russell's contributions to the 2005 Satin Finish nickel attribution catalog document several distinct doubled die reverse events on this design, of which WDDR-046 is one example.
