Description

Kenneth Russell attributed this 2005-P Satin Finish Jefferson Nickel "Ocean in View" reverse doubled die, cataloged as WDDR-035 and cross-referenced as CDDR-021 (Wexler Variety ID: 2005 P WDDR-035 Satin Finish Ocean in View). The Westward Journey Nickel Series of 2004-2005 commemorated the Lewis and Clark Expedition, and the Ocean in View reverse — designed by Joe Fitzgerald — depicts the Pacific coastline with Clark's November 7, 1805 journal caption. Satin Finish coins were struck exclusively for 2005 Uncirculated Mint Sets using planchet burnishing, giving the surfaces a distinctive matte-like appearance distinct from proof and business strike coins. The design generated more than 80 cataloged DDR varieties, reflecting the complexity of the detailed coastal landscape through multiple hub-to-die generations. The CDDR-021 cross-reference provides a second attribution anchor in the Coppercoins doubled die catalog. Attribution requires low-angle raking illumination — the burnished matte surface diffuses light differently, and overhead lighting misses close hub misalignment on the fine coastal topography.
