2005 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-003
Error
Description
Dual-attributed by both CONECA (3-R-VIII) and the Wexler Team (2005-P 25c SF OR WDDR-003), this doubled die reverse on the 2005-P Oregon Crater Lake State Quarter exhibits Class VIII (Tilted Hub Doubling) that manifests on the underside of Wizard Island's right end. Wizard Island, the volcanic cinder cone that rises from the deep blue waters of Crater Lake, is the central design element of the Oregon quarter reverse, and doubling along the island's right edge creates a subtle but measurable secondary contour that parallels the primary shoreline. Obverse die markers are detailed: two small die gouges appear at the start of the hairline east-southeast of Washington's eye, and a die crack runs through the upper portions of the JF initials. On the reverse, a small die gouge can be found above the small trees on the lower shoreline — a marker positioned among the design's fine botanical details. The Oregon State Quarter was the twenty-ninth issue in the 50 State Quarters program (1999-2008), and Crater Lake's distinctive caldera-and-island composition by Donna Weaver created a reverse rich in geological texture where tilted hub displacement registers as shifted rock and water boundary lines. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint on copper-nickel clad planchets at 5.67 grams, the 2005-P Oregon quarter circulated widely. The dual CONECA and Wexler attribution provides collectors with independent verification of the Class VIII tilted hub mechanism and confirms the diagnostic validity of the Wizard Island shoreline doubling.
