2005 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-005
Error
Description
On the 2005-P Oregon State Quarter, WDDR-005 presents doubling above the second lowest branch on the left side of the short tree in the Crater Lake National Park design. The Wexler Team attributed this variety as 2005-P 25¢ OR WDDR-005, finding no additional cross-references. Oregon's State Quarter, designed by Donna Weaver, features a view of Crater Lake with Wizard Island and surrounding evergreen trees, and the tree imagery provides numerous fine branches where hub doubling can create visible secondary images. Obverse die markers include a short die crack running across the front tip of the base of Washington's bust. On the reverse, a small die gouge sits to the left of the bottom of the 2 in 2005, and another small die gouge appears to the right of the bottom of the tall tree, well to the NNE of the DW designer's initials. The multi-point marker system across both obverse and reverse allows positive identification even on worn examples where the doubling itself may be diminished. Philadelphia produced 316.2 million Oregon quarters in 2005, making this a high-mintage issue where variety examples can potentially surface in circulation searches. The State Quarters program (1999-2008) generated unprecedented public interest in coin collecting, with millions of Americans assembling state-by-state sets from pocket change. This grassroots engagement created a lasting community of variety hunters who continue to examine State Quarter issues for doubled dies, repunched mintmarks, and other die anomalies, with WDDR-005 representing one of many Oregon-specific discoveries from that era of intense public numismatic activity.
