2005 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-008
Error
Description
Oregon's Crater Lake dominates the reverse of this State Quarter, and DDR-008 places strong doubling directly on the volcanic peak — one of the most visually dramatic locations for hub doubling on any State Quarter reverse. The strong spread in the lower right side of the volcano creates a secondary impression alongside the mountain's slope, effectively giving the peak an additional ridge that alters the caldera's profile. Die markers UVC-1729 and DMR-010 support attribution for this 2005-P regular strike. Three die stages are documented: Stage A at Early Die State, Stage B at Mid Die State with a die chip on Washington's nose, and Stage C at Late Die State (unconfirmed). Designed by Donna Weaver, the Oregon State Quarter depicts Crater Lake's volcanic rim with Wizard Island at center, a design rich in topographic detail where doubling on geological features creates striking visual effects. The MDS die chip on Washington's nose provides a secondary diagnostic for confirming the correct die pair without evaluating the reverse doubling first, offering a quick screening point for this compelling variety.
