2005 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-006

Description

Sixth in the reverse doubled die census for the 2005 Hawaii State Quarter, DDR-006 presents very strong spread in the lower right side of the volcano — King Kamehameha I's striking design by Don Everhart II that features the monarch extending his hand above the Hawaiian Islands with the state motto "Ua Mau ke Ea o ka Aina i ka Pono" (The life of the land is perpetuated in righteousness). VarietyVista documented this variety under UVC-1681 and DMR-008, with Stage A showing both reverse and obverse at early die state (EDS), Stage B at MDS (unconfirmed), and Stage C at LDS (unconfirmed). The comments note "SMS" and "Can be found in Mint Sets," indicating this variety appears on Satin Finish specimens produced exclusively for 2005 uncirculated mint sets — the special matte finish that replaced the standard business strike finish in mint sets from 2005 through 2010. The very strong spread designation makes this one of the more dramatic doubled die varieties in the State Quarter program, as the volcanic terrain's irregular contours amplify the visual impact of hub displacement. Hawaii quarters were struck at both Philadelphia and Denver during 2005 as the final issue in the annual five-state rotation for that year. The satin finish production process used distinct die preparation compared to standard business strikes, and the matte surface texture can actually enhance visibility of doubling diagnostics by reducing the glare that sometimes obscures subtle variety features on brilliant surfaces. Collectors should examine the lower right portion of the volcano under 10-15x magnification, where the very strong spread produces clearly displaced secondary contours in the volcanic landscape detail.
