2005 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-003
Error
Description
Third reverse doubled die documented for the 2005 State Quarter, DDR-003 exhibits strong spread on the lower right portion of the volcano on the Oregon Statehood quarter reverse. The Oregon quarter features Crater Lake — the deepest lake in the United States, formed within the caldera of the collapsed Mount Mazama volcano — and the volcanic landscape design provides detailed topographical elements where hub doubling produces clearly visible secondary contours. VarietyVista assigned identifiers UVC-1533 and DMR-005, documenting three die stages: Stage A where both reverse and obverse surfaces exhibit early die state characteristics, Stage B at mid die state (unconfirmed), and Stage C at late die state (unconfirmed). The EDS confirmation for Stage A ensures specimens with fresh die surfaces preserving maximum doubling clarity have been verified. Two important comment notations characterize this variety: "SMS" identifies it as a Satin Finish specimen from the 2005 uncirculated coin set, and "Can be found in Mint Sets" directs collectors to the specific product where examples can be sourced. Satin Finish coins (produced 2005-2010) received a distinctive matte, granular surface treatment using burnished dies and planchets, creating a luster different from both standard circulation strikes and proof coins. The strong spread classification on the lower right volcano contour indicates substantial hub displacement that should be visible under moderate magnification, and the detailed topographical design of Crater Lake's volcanic rim provides excellent reference lines for detecting the doubled secondary impression. John Flanagan's Washington obverse pairs with the Donna Weaver volcano design, and the State Quarter program's popularity ensures strong collector demand for attributed varieties. Collectors should examine the lower right quadrant of the Crater Lake design under 10-15x magnification, focusing on the volcanic rim contours where strong spread will appear as clearly displaced secondary landscape lines.
