Description

Strong spread on the upper portion of the short tree and on many of the middle branches of the tall tree earns this second doubled die reverse for the 2005 State Quarter the significant Fivaz-Stanton designation FS-802, marking it as a variety recognized in the standard reference guide for error and variety coins. Attributed by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-1532 and DMR-004, die stages show Stage A with both reverse and obverse in Early Die State and subsequent stages unconfirmed. The FS-802 cross-reference and SMS notation indicate this variety can be found in Mint Sets — the satin-finish coins produced for annual uncirculated sets from 2005 through 2010 — which narrows the strike type and gives collectors a specific product to search. The 2005 State Quarter program included California, Minnesota, Oregon, Kansas, and West Virginia, and this DDR's tree elements point to one of the designs featuring natural scenery. As DDR-002, this is the second-strongest documented doubled die reverse for the year, and its FS designation means it has achieved broad recognition beyond the specialist variety community. The strong spread on branching tree elements is particularly visually compelling, as each doubled branch creates a distinct ghost image that is easier to identify than the subtler doubling typically seen on inscription lettering.
