2005 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-048

Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista with die identifiers UVC-1503 and DMR-051, this 2005 State Quarter DDR-048 presents a strong but light spread showing the highest relief areas of the rock to the right of the third tree floating free in the field to the northwest of the rock, with a tiny bit of the third tree also showing doubling — a localized manifestation where hub displacement created a phantom rock and tree element displaced from their primary positions into the adjacent field. Three die stages are documented: Stage A at early die state with the reverse in EDS and die scratches visible through STATES; Stage B at mid-die-state (MDS, unconfirmed); and Stage C at late die state (LDS, unconfirmed). The die scratches through STATES in Stage A serve as an early-state identification marker that would be worn away in later stages. The State Quarter program (1999-2008) featured unique reverse designs for each of the 50 states, struck in copper-nickel clad composition — 8.33% nickel over a pure copper core — weighing 5.67 grams with a diameter of 24.26 mm. John Flanagan's Washington portrait, modified by William Cousins, appears on the obverse. The "floating free" description of the doubled rock and tree elements indicates the secondary impressions have separated visually from the primary design, appearing as independent design elements suspended in the field — a particularly striking visual effect that occurs when the magnitude of hub displacement exceeds the width of the design element being doubled, pushing the secondary image entirely outside the primary element's footprint.
