2005 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-043

Description

One of the celebrated "extra tree" varieties on the 2005 Minnesota State Quarter, DDR-043 displays a medium spread manifesting as an additional tree tucked in close and low to the right of the third full tree in the state's boundary-waters design. Extra tree varieties rank among the most famous and sought-after errors in the entire State Quarter program, having generated widespread media coverage and collector excitement when first discovered. Cataloged by VarietyVista with UVC-1498 and DMR-046, the die progressed through three documented stages: Stage A with both reverse and obverse at early die state, Stage B showing a light die crack running west from the upper state outline to the rim at early-to-mid die state with the obverse also at early-to-mid die state, and Stage C at late die state remaining unconfirmed. The developing die crack in Stage B provides a useful secondary diagnostic for determining which die state a given specimen represents. Struck at Philadelphia in copper-nickel clad composition, the 2005 Minnesota Quarter was part of the 50 State Quarters program that transformed a generation of Americans into coin collectors.
