Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-1482 with die marriage DMR-030, this 2005 Philadelphia Mint Minnesota State Quarter displays a medium doubled die reverse featuring a portion of the third full tree to the right of the state outline, with the doubling fully displaced from its point of origin into the open field close to the left side of the tree. The full displacement of the doubled image away from the primary design element makes this variety visually distinctive, as the secondary tree image appears as an independent phantom element in the field rather than overlapping with the original design. Three die stages have been documented: Stage A shows both reverse and obverse in early die state, with Stages B and C representing mid and late die states respectively. The Minnesota State Quarter, released in 2005 as part of the 50 State Quarters program, features a design depicting the state's lakes and forests alongside the state outline, with "Land of 10,000 Lakes" as its motto. The detailed tree designs in the Minnesota reverse provided particularly fertile ground for doubled die varieties, and the 2005 Minnesota quarter is known among collectors for several notable doubled die listings. Struck in the standard clad composition of copper-nickel bonded to a pure copper core, this Philadelphia Mint issue was part of one of the most successful coin programs in U.S. Mint history, generating widespread public interest in coin collecting.
