2005 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001

Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team, this 2005-P California State Quarter exhibits a doubled die reverse produced by hub misalignment during die preparation. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 2005-P 25-cent CA WDDR-001. Die markers on the obverse include small die gouges below the right side of U in TRUST and to the right of the P mintmark top. On the reverse, a small die gouge appears right of the bottom of O in CALIFORNIA, another right of the lower 5 in 2005, and two parallel horizontal die scratches run just above the letters of YOSEMITE. The Yosemite scratches provide a distinctive reverse attribution marker. Struck in copper-nickel clad at 5.67 grams and 24.26 mm, the California Quarter's reverse depicts naturalist John Muir with a California condor and Half Dome in Yosemite Valley, making doubled die effects detectable against its detailed scenic design.
