2005-D Doubled Die Reverse DDR-004

Description

Fourth in the reverse doubled die catalog for the 2005-D Minnesota State Quarter, DDR-004 exhibits medium spread concentrated in the lower right side of the volcano-like landform on the state reverse designed by Charles L. Vickers. The Minnesota quarter — featuring the state outline overlaid with a stylized depiction of the Land of 10,000 Lakes including a fisherman, pine trees, and a loon on water — entered circulation in 2005 as the thirty-second release in the 50 State Quarters Program. VarietyVista documented this die under identifiers UVC-1665 and DMR-006, establishing three die stages: Stage A where both reverse and obverse surfaces display early die state characteristics, Stage B at mid die state (unconfirmed), and Stage C at late die state (unconfirmed). The confirmed EDS for Stage A verifies that specimens with fresh, sharply impressed die surfaces have been positively identified and documented. Like DDR-006 from the same date, DDR-004 carries the SMS (Satin Finish) notation, restricting its occurrence to coins produced for 2005 United States Mint Uncirculated Sets rather than standard circulation strikes. Satin finish production used specially treated dies that imparted a distinctive soft, non-reflective luster to the coin surfaces, and the controlled production environment of mint set manufacturing potentially allowed doubled dies to persist through longer runs without the quality control interventions more common on high-speed circulation strike presses.
