2005-D Doubled Die Reverse DDR-001
Error
Description
Primary reverse doubled die for the 2005-D Hawaii State Quarter, DDR-001 exhibits strong spread below the lower right side of the volcano depicted on the reverse — a striking doubled die affecting one of the most visually dramatic reverse designs in the 50 State Quarters Program. VarietyVista assigned die identifiers UVC-1552 and DMR-003, documenting three die stages: Stage A where both reverse and obverse surfaces show early die state characteristics (confirmed), Stage B at mid die state (unconfirmed), and Stage C at late die state (unconfirmed). The comments note "SMS" and that this variety "can be found in Mint Sets" — indicating it appears on satin finish specimens from the 2005 Uncirculated Mint Set, which used a special satin finish process for coins included in that year's sets. The Hawaii quarter reverse, designed by Don Everhart, features King Kamehameha I standing before the Hawaiian Islands with a volcanic landscape, and the strong spread below the volcano's lower right side places the doubling in an area where the sloped volcanic terrain provides detection surfaces with clear directional geometry. Denver produced approximately 174.16 million Hawaii quarters in 2005. Strong spread as the DDR-001 designation indicates this is both the primary and most notable reverse doubled die for the 2005-D Hawaii issue. The EDS confirmation for Stage A means specimens with fresh, unworn die surfaces have been verified, preserving the doubling at maximum clarity. Collectors searching for this variety should examine the area below and to the right of the volcano under 10-15x magnification, where the strong hub displacement creates visible secondary impressions of the volcanic slope against the primary design — satin finish Mint Set specimens may provide the clearest diagnostics due to their specially prepared surfaces.
