2004-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-002
ErrorDescription
Manifesting as a doubled left nostril on the cow depicted on the Wisconsin State Quarter reverse, this second Wexler-attributed doubled die reverse for the 2004 Denver Mint Wisconsin quarter belongs to one of the most publicized modern error discoveries. The Wisconsin quarter's reverse design features a cow, a wheel of cheese, and an ear of corn, and WDDR-002 shows the doubling specifically on the cow's nostril area. Die markers provide precise attribution diagnostics: on the obverse, a die gouge sits left of the T in QUARTER and another right of the A in DOLLAR, with two die gouges left of the U in UNITED. On the reverse, a die chip appears at the right end of the ribbon, with additional die chips at the lower right serif of the F and the lower serif of the D in FORWARD. Attributed by the Wexler Team under Wexler Variety ID 2004-D 25 cents WI WDDR-002, this variety is distinct from the more famous "Extra Leaf" Wisconsin quarters that generated headlines and dealer premiums in late 2004 and early 2005. The State Quarters program (1999-2008) produced enormous public interest in coin collecting, and the Wisconsin varieties became some of the most sought-after modern error coins, with mainstream media coverage bringing unprecedented attention to die varieties.
