Description

The 2004 (D) Iowa State Quarter represents a Denver Mint issue from the State Quarters 1999-2008 series. The U.S. Mint produced 251.8 million examples, making this ranked 10th of 12 mint variants by mintage, with 9% of production. The obverse features George Washington facing left, based on a 1786 bust by Jean-Antoine Houdon and the reverse displays unique designs representing each of the 50 U.S. states, released in the order of statehood ratification. The reverse features a one-room schoolhouse with a teacher and students planting a tree, inspired by Grant Wood's painting, with the inscription "Foundation in Education." The design celebrates Iowa's deep commitment to education. Michigan, Florida, Texas, Iowa, and Wisconsin. The 2004-D Wisconsin "Extra Leaf" varieties (High Leaf and Low Leaf) became the most famous State Quarter errors. Coined at Denver's facility, which transitioned from processing Colorado gold rush metal to full-scale coin production in 1906.
