SKH-10c-2003P-01 Spiked Head

Description

First and only spiked head variety cataloged for the 2003 Philadelphia Roosevelt Dime, distinguished by a prominent spike-shaped protrusion extending from Roosevelt's profile. The obverse die reached a late die state (LDS) before retirement, evidenced by numerous die chips scattered across Roosevelt's face — a deterioration pattern consistent with sustained high-volume production at Philadelphia. Late die state chips in facial features are among the most reliable secondary markers for confirming attribution, as they develop progressively and can help sequence die stages relative to other known specimens. Cataloged by Cuds on Coins within the Roosevelt Dimes Clad and Silver Proof 1965 to Date series, with no established cross-references as of March 2016. Spiked heads on Roosevelt Dimes are considerably scarcer in the attribution record than their Washington Quarter counterparts, making this 2003-P specimen a noteworthy addition to the die anomaly census for the denomination.
