Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 2003 1-cent WDDR-014, this Lincoln Memorial Cent doubled die reverse shows doubling on the lower right side of the 6th column to the left of the statue's lower legs and the upper pedestal, with an extra leg visible between the statue's lower legs extending down into the upper pedestal area. The Lincoln Memorial Cent was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in copper-plated zinc at 2.50 grams and 19.05 mm diameter, featuring Frank Gasparro's detailed rendering of the Lincoln Memorial interior with the seated Lincoln statue visible between the columns. No other cross-references are known beyond the Wexler designation. The extra leg feature between the statue's lower extremities represents one of the more visually distinctive doubled die effects possible on the Memorial reverse, as the fine detail of the miniature seated Lincoln figure amplifies even small hub shifts into noticeable secondary design elements. Obverse die markers indicate Early Die State with nothing significant noted. On the reverse, a die gouge can be found midway between the second A in AMERICA and the designer's initials FG (Frank Gasparro), plus a small die gouge to the right of the upper T in CENT. The appearance of extra limb features within the seated statue area has produced some of the most collected Memorial Cent doubled dies, as the human figure provides instantly recognizable reference points for identifying displaced elements.
