SKH-1c-2003-02 Spiked Head
Error
Description
Die clash events on early 2000s Lincoln Memorial Cents produced this second documented spiked head for the 2003 Philadelphia Mint issue. The die clash mechanism on Memorial Cents involves the same fundamental process as on all denominations — a planchet feed failure causes the obverse and reverse dies to contact each other directly — but the specific design elements transferred differ from those on later Shield Cents. On Memorial Cents, it is the architectural detail of the Lincoln Memorial building, designed by Frank Gasparro, that impresses into the obverse die during a clash event. The memorial's columns, steps, and frieze create transferred impressions that manifest as raised protrusions from Lincoln's portrait, though typically less dramatically than the bold geometric lines of the post-2010 Shield reverse. The 2003-P cent was produced during a period of high annual output at Philadelphia, with billions of coins struck across numerous die pairs. Two spiked heads documented for 2003-P is a modest count compared to what Shield Cent dates would later generate, but it reflects the lower clash impression visibility inherent in the Memorial reverse design. SKH-1c-2003-02 was cataloged on February 20, 2025, by Cuds on Coins — a relatively recent addition to the catalog, demonstrating that die variety research continues to uncover previously undocumented varieties even on coins struck more than two decades ago. Collectors examining 2003-P cents may still find additional spiked heads awaiting documentation.
