2003 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-001

Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 2003 1-cent WDDR-001 with no other known cross-references, this Lincoln Memorial Cent doubled die reverse shows doubling on the lower left side of the 7th column to the right of the statue's upper legs, with additional doubling visible between the upper legs. The Lincoln Memorial Cent was struck in copper-plated zinc at 2.50 grams and 19.05 mm diameter, with Victor David Brenner's obverse portrait and Frank Gasparro's Lincoln Memorial reverse. A particularly notable obverse die marker is a die crack known as a "Spiked Head" — running from southwest to northeast through the hair on the upper back of Lincoln's head and continuing into the center of the W in WE. Spiked Head varieties are independently collectible, making this die pair doubly interesting for carrying both a doubled die reverse and a Spiked Head obverse. Reverse markers include a die gouge to the left of the lower E in CENT and a short die crack running northeast from the top of the 4th column. The column and statue area of the Memorial reverse requires high magnification to examine, as the Lincoln statue within the building is rendered at extremely small scale on the one-cent denomination.
