Description

Identified by VarietyVista with die markers UVC-3218 and DMR-015, this 12th doubled die reverse for the 2003 Lincoln Memorial Cent exhibits a medium spread east as an extra column number 6, visible from the knee to the pedestal. The eastward displacement differentiates this from the westward-spreading varieties more commonly documented on column 7, demonstrating that hub misalignment could occur in either lateral direction during the die manufacturing process. Die state tracking shows Stage A with both reverse and obverse at Early Die State, Stage B at Mid Die State unconfirmed, and Stage C at Late Die State unconfirmed. The column 6 spread from knee to pedestal means the doubled image is concentrated on the lower portion of the sixth column counting from the left side of the Lincoln Memorial building — the column immediately to the left of the seated statue. This positioning places the doubled element near the center of the reverse design, where it is more likely to be noticed during casual examination compared to doubling on peripheral design elements. The 2003 date was the forty-fourth year of Gasparro's Memorial reverse, and production at Philadelphia continued to consume die pairs at a rate that ensured a steady stream of doubled die discoveries for researchers employing systematic die examination protocols.
