2003 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-003
Error
Description
Producing a medium spread to the northeast, this third cataloged doubled die reverse for the 2003 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Memorial Cent manifests as an extra column 6 — the column spanning from the statue's hand to its knee — along with an additional knee visible above and between the existing knees of the seated Lincoln figure. The northeast directional spread indicates the hub shifted up and to the right between impressions, displacing architectural and figural elements in that direction. Cataloged by VarietyVista with die marker codes UVC-2915 and DMR-006, the variety is documented across multiple die states: Stage A with the reverse in early die state and the obverse in mid-die-state, Stage B at mid-die-state (unconfirmed), and Stage C at late die state (unconfirmed). Tracking die states allows collectors to identify how the coin's appearance changes as the die wears — early die state specimens typically show the sharpest doubling, while late die state coins may exhibit additional die cracks or deterioration that partially obscures the original doubling. Column 6 and the knee area are frequent locations for visible doubling on Memorial Cent reverses.
