2002 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-027

Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team, this 2002 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Memorial Cent doubled die reverse is cataloged as Wexler 2002 1-cent WDDR-027 and features a partial extra knee visible between the statue's knees — a doubling effect on the tiny seated Lincoln figure inside the Memorial that creates what appears to be an additional knee between the two normal ones. On the obverse, a die gouge sits below and between the bottoms of the two zeros in the date, and die gouges appear to the right of Lincoln's chin. On the reverse, a die gouge is present above the right side of the T in CENT, and a small die gouge touches the central right side of the eleventh Memorial column. The partial extra knee diagnostic is among the more visually compelling doubled die markers on Memorial Cents because it creates a recognizable anatomical anomaly on the tiny statue detail. Twenty-seven documented doubled die reverses for the 2002 Philadelphia date reflects the ongoing productivity of modern Lincoln Cent variety research. The die gouges on both obverse and reverse provide strong secondary markers for confirming this die pair.
