Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 2002 1-cent WDDR-020, this Lincoln Memorial Cent doubled die reverse shows doubling on the lower left side of the 7th Memorial column to the right of the statue's legs and on the upper pedestal, with an extra leg visible between the statue's lower legs extending down into the upper pedestal area. The Lincoln Memorial Cent was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in copper-plated zinc at 2.50 grams and 19.05 mm diameter. No other cross-references are known. The extra leg diagnostic within the seated Lincoln statue is a striking visual feature that makes this variety more identifiable than many minor doubled dies. Obverse die markers include a die gouge SW of the I of IN, a die gouge to the right of the bottom of the second T in TRUST, and a small die gouge below the left side of the second two (the 0) in the date. On the reverse, a small die gouge can be found to the right of the lower part of the right cornice of the Memorial building. The 2002 Philadelphia Cent had a mintage of 3,260,800,000 pieces, an enormous production run that means even relatively scarce die varieties can potentially be found through patient roll searching, though the copper-plated zinc composition makes high-grade examples more susceptible to environmental damage than the older bronze cents.
