Description

Opening a consecutive pair with WDDR-018, this 2002 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial Cent variety documents a hub displacement event on a die that entered service during the same production period as its sequential catalog neighbor. Consecutive Wexler numbers do not necessarily mean the dies were manufactured simultaneously, but the pairing often reflects a discovery session where a researcher found multiple varieties in rapid succession while examining rolls or bags from the same source. The Memorial reverse's twelve columns function as a built-in measurement grid: when hub displacement occurs, the columns record both the direction and magnitude of the misalignment through the position and extent of their ghost images. This grid-like quality is why the Memorial reverse has generated one of the most extensive DDR censuses of any design in the Lincoln Cent series — more extensive even than the wheat ears reverse, which ran from 1909 to 1958. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID 2002 1c WDDR-017.
