Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 2002 1-cent WDDR-013, this Lincoln Memorial Cent displays doubling on the central left side of the 7th Memorial column to the right of the upper part of the Lincoln statue, with extra knees visible between the statue's right hand and the 7th column and above the statue's right knee. The architectural precision of Frank Gasparro's Lincoln Memorial reverse design makes the interior column and statue details particularly sensitive indicators of hub doubling, as the fine parallel lines of the Memorial columns and the small seated Lincoln figure amplify even modest displacement into clearly detectable doubled features. Obverse die markers include a small die gouge inside the lower N of IN and a die gouge north of the second zero in the date. No significant reverse die markers beyond the doubling itself have been documented. The Lincoln Memorial Cent was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 2002 in standard copper-plated zinc composition (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper), weighing 2.5 grams at 19 mm diameter, with a mintage of 3,260,800,000 cents. The focus on the 7th column area — near the center of the Memorial structure where the seated Lincoln statue is visible — makes this variety diagnostically precise: collectors should examine the column immediately to the right of the statue's upper body under 10x magnification, looking for the doubled column edge and the extra knee details that appear as secondary impressions of the statue's lower anatomy. No other cross-references are currently known for this variety.
