Description

Medium Southwest spread produces an extra column #7 extending from the hand to the shin of the seated Lincoln figure, along with doubled knees visible between the statue's legs, on this 2002 Philadelphia Lincoln Memorial Cent DDR-004. The Memorial interior's twelve columns and the Daniel Chester French-inspired seated Lincoln statue provide some of the most geometrically precise diagnostic surfaces in United States coinage, where even moderate hub displacement creates visible architectural doubling. Die markers UVC-2881 and DMR-005 document three stages: Stage A with reverse and obverse at Early Die State, followed by unconfirmed Mid Die State and Late Die State stages. Philadelphia struck 3,260,800,000 Lincoln Cents in 2002, continuing the massive production volumes characteristic of the Memorial Cent's final decade before the 2009 Bicentennial and 2010 Shield Cent transitions. The Southwest spread direction means the secondary column image appears below and to the left of the primary column, creating a shadow effect that is most visible when the coin is examined under directional lighting. Cataloged by VarietyVista, DDR-004 demonstrates how the repeated vertical columns of Gasparro's Memorial interior serve as natural doubling indicators, with column #7 being particularly diagnostic due to its proximity to the statue.
