Description

On the westernmost column of the Lincoln Memorial reverse, the 2002 Philadelphia Lincoln Cent DDR-002 shows medium spread in the West direction as an extra column #7 extending from the knee down to the pedestal. West-direction spread pushes the secondary column image to the left of the primary, and the knee-to-pedestal extent places the doubling on the lower portion where the column meets its base. Die markers UVC-2879 and DMR-003 provide the cataloging references, and Stage A records the die in Early-to-Mid Die State, indicating some initial use but enough sharpness to transfer the doubled column clearly. Column #7 West varieties are the most commonly encountered spread direction on Memorial cent DDRs because column #7 sits at the leftmost edge of the facade, where rotational hub displacement tends to produce the most visible separation. The 2002 Philadelphia cent was struck in copper-plated zinc, and the high mintage typical of this era ensured extensive die usage. DDR-002 represents one of the earlier cataloged reverse varieties for this date, with its lower-column spread distinguishing it from full-length doublings.
