2002-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-008
Error
Description
Obverse die markers tell the attribution story first on WDDR-008: die gouges appearing as dots below the B in LIBERTY, a die gouge to the right of the upper Y in LIBERTY, and a small die gouge on the lower right edge of the O in GOD collectively frame the obverse before the examiner even turns to the doubled reverse. On the reverse, die gouges appear above the T and inside the upper opening of the N in CENT, with a series of wispy die scratches visible in Memorial bays 10 and 11 — the rightmost bays of the twelve-bay facade where die scratches often accumulate from the die finishing process. The Wexler Team attributed this as 2002-D 1¢ WDDR-008, with the cross-references field carrying only a placeholder notation. Denver produced approximately 3.7 billion Lincoln Cents in 2002, a high-volume output that generated extensive die variety populations across both the doubled die and die marker categories. The die gouges on LIBERTY and GOD provide particularly useful diagnostics because these obverse locations are among the first areas collectors examine when screening coins, making it possible to pre-identify potential WDDR-008 specimens before confirming the reverse doubling. Memorial bays 10 and 11 sit near the right edge of the building facade, an area where die scratches from polishing or finishing tools naturally accumulate as workers addressed the die surface. The distribution of gouges across both obverse and reverse suggests this die pair had accumulated significant tooling evidence throughout its preparation, providing a rich field of secondary diagnostics beyond the primary doubled die reverse characteristic.
