Description

The 2001 (P) Proof U.S. Capitol Visitor Center Commemorative Half Dollar is a proof commemorative half dollar struck at the Philadelphia Mint. The U.S. Mint produced 77,962 examples. Part of the Capitol Visitor Center three-coin program, this half dollar references the earliest days of Congress when just 32 senators and 106 representatives served. The obverse features the North Wing of the original Capitol superimposed on an outline of the present building, with a horse-drawn carriage in the foreground, while the reverse displays sixteen stars with the inscription '32 Senators; 106 House Members,' representing the first Congress. Designed by Dean McMullen/Alex Shagin and Marcel Jovine. Struck in 75% copper, 25% nickel over a pure copper center, weighing 11.34 grams, 30.6 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #99790. The Capitol Visitor Center half dollar is one of the lower-mintage modern half dollar commemoratives, making it a key issue for series collectors.
