Description
Cataloged by VarietyVista with provisional die identifiers (UVC and DMR numbers pending), this 2001 Denver Mint State Quarter carries a doubled die reverse showing strong spread manifesting as extra fingers on Liberty's left hand in the New York State Quarter reverse design. Three die stages have been documented: Stage A with both reverse and obverse at early-to-mid die state, Stage B at mid-die state (unconfirmed), and Stage C at late die state (unconfirmed). The 2001 New York State Quarter, designed by Alfred Maletsky, features the Statue of Liberty superimposed over an outline of New York State with the legend "Gateway to Freedom" — and the statue's outstretched hand holding the torch provided detailed anatomy where hub doubling created visually dramatic extra fingers. The State Quarters program (1999-2008) was the most ambitious U.S. circulating commemorative effort in history, and each state's unique reverse design introduced new geometry that could manifest doubled die varieties in distinctive ways. Extra fingers from doubling on Liberty's hand is among the more eye-catching doubled die features in the entire State Quarter series, as human anatomy errors are immediately recognizable even to casual observers. The VDDR (VarietyVista Doubled Die Reverse) designation and the provisional UVC/DMR numbers suggest this variety was documented before complete die stage analysis was finalized.
